E-Myth
Michael Gerber in the legendary E-Myth book extols the virtue of working on your business not in it, and for ages I never really understood how I could make the shift or find the time to do just that. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day activity of your business that’s the hours fly by and the days merge into each other.
What was my solution ?
The one thing as a business entrepreneur we all need to grasp is you have to make time to work On the business not In the business, what opened my eyes to my solution was at a recent mentor session with my business mentor Paul Avins. Paul introduced me to the to idea of planning in Focus days in to my default dairy, time set aside almost sacrosanct to work On the business and on my own personal development. The last 24 months been an incredible journey for me and I have read more and developed more as an entrepreneur than I had in the previous 10 years, and in that time I had been very successful, so once I got my head round setting aside time to focus I came to accept that I could reach my full potential at long last.
Sitting in front of my diary this week I went through and blocked out every 2nd and 4th Thursday as Focus days in 2012, it took me ages to finally do it but I have now and I have made it public too.
My next challenge was breaking the news to my team and today when we looked at our plans for 2012 and the opportunities that we have (and we realised we have loads) I told them of my plans for Focus Days. The support I received back was amazing and everyone I think got it. They are a great bunch and have worked so hard this past 12 months which makes me just so so proud of them all.
Take Action
January is always a time for reflection, both personal and business, but I’d like to encourage you to do two extra things when reflecting, first read E-Myth if you haven’t done so, if you have read it go back and read it again. The second is to take the bull by the horns and block out your focus days.
